2026 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+ Full Review with Photos: Lexus Brings Luxury to Off-Road
The Lexus GX has always balanced capability and comfort. Now a new GX 550 Overtrail+ trim sharpens that legacy for an off-road era. We put it to the test on the backroads of upstate New York.
Highs: Very responsive steering and impressive off-road handling, high-quality finishes and thoughtful ergonomics. Excellent visibility in all directions.
Lows: Startling fuel efficiency (EPA-estimated 17 MPG combined). Low second-row headroom. Heavy road noise when the optional off-road roof rack is attached.
Verdict: A responsible blend of technology and driver-focused tuning makes the Lexus GX 550 a rewarding luxury SUV, ready for practically any terrain.
The model to get: GX 550 Overtrail+.

Those familiar with the GX models of past might recall its subdued body lines, stocky, body-on-frame profile, and the amusingly high placement of the taillights. That design did nothing to suggest the fact the GX would end up being one of the most capable off-roaders since its debut in 2002. Now, the 2026 Lexus GX arrives as a contemporary SUV whose form openly reflects its purpose. In this new era of luxury, evidence of utility and functionality are the signals.

The GX is a product of Lexus’s “Next Chapter” design ethos and, while distinct from the broader product range, it features some key Lexus brand elements. The front fascia forms a tastefully scaled hourglass shape; a sharp but clean interpretation of a Lexus signature. Narrow strikes of headlight house triple-beam LEDs and discreet fog lights are slotted below.

A high, uninterrupted, and mildly scalloped belt line carries through from tip to tail, giving the truck a horizontal sincerity and sense of stability. Gently rounded and beveled corners soften the appearance without losing intention. The truck isn’t minimalist but it is certainly tailored and edited. A small kink at the D-pillar makes subtle reference to a legacy design element found in earlier GX models.
Our vehicle, finished in Nori Green Pearl, feels decidedly deciduous with green metallic flakes playing in the light. The effect makes the GX deeply satisfying to observe from any angle.

The Overtrail+ spec (as tested) brings some additional enhancements to the exterior including a 1-inch suspension lift, bringing ground clearance to 9.84 inches. This small change pays visual dividends: the stance becomes stout, athletic, and distinctly expedition-ready.

The GX Overtrail can be customized with countless factory options and packages to build a truly differentiated vehicle. Our vehicle featured expedition-ready enhancements including a tray style roof rack, rock rails, and hitch cover. Paired with 18-inch matte-gray alloy wheels wrapped in 33-inch all-terrain tires by Toyo, the machine looked like a factory-built overland rig.

2026 Lexus GX550 Interior Design
Front Cabin of the 2026 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+. Image: Ben Yamin Schmidt.
Lexus describes the interior as being inspired by a “forest cabin”, which is a curious comparison. If anything, it feels like a contemporary home in the mountains, with walls of windows providing grand views in all directions and plush materials cocooning the guests.

In the cockpit, the digital instrument cluster sits below the windshield and is aligned with the touch screen, granting forward sightlines that are critical in tight terrain. An upright dashboard reinforces the horizontally planted feeling from the exterior. There are physical knobs for climate temperature and volume.
While a traditional gear shift inspires confidence, two USB-C ports sit conveniently, drilled directly into a bezel. A deep console features a soft arm rest positioned at the perfect height. The power outlet accepts up to 12V. The two cup holders can be covered with a sliding door.

The cabin features plenty of physical buttons, many with distinct and singular functions. Muscle memory works here, especially the case the prominent camera-activating “view” button to the right of the steering wheel, which became essential in our driving experience.
Tricky was the position of the ignition’s start/stop button. Placed toward the top of the dashboard, we’d often be halfway out of the vehicle before realizing we left the ignition on, simply because we forgot about the button.

Drive mode buttons, tow buttons, crawl buttons. There are even buttons that technically do nothing: a row of auxiliary buttons on the driver’s side are designed to be programmed to power off-roading gear, extra lighting, or other extensions after purchase.
GX’s Chief Engineer Koji Tsukasaki has compared the GX to a diver’s watch, and that feels accurate. Even if its full capabilities are rarely used (or are eligible for ), its reassuring that the feature is available or customizable. The range of stuff is simply astounding. Whether its the front seats equipped with massage functions through to the fully-integrated air compressor with a self-coiling hose (standard in the Overtrail trim), it felts like we only scratched the surface of this truck’s features.

Our GX 550 Overtrail+’s interior featured a rich color palette and range of textures. A creamy beige (“Chateau NuLuxe”) pairs beautifully with Olive Ultrasuede accents along with a black grained trim. Together, the feeling is extremely elevated. Materials feel premium but not delicate, and the contour of the seats made long-distance comfort easy.
What is NuLuxe Upholstery?
NuLuxe is a Lexus-developed synthetic upholstery designed to offer the look and feel of leather with improved durability and lower environmental impact. It is lighter than traditional leather, more resistant to temperature extremes, and easier to maintain, making it well suited to everyday use.

Chrome accents pop up in just the right places: near handles, along openings, and near buttons. Second-row headroom is somewhat limited, measuring 46.8 inches in Overtrail+ trims, which taller passengers will notice immediately. Legroom, however, is generous at 36.73 inches. The rear seats can be folded forward with an easy motion, transforming the cargo area into a fully flat area.

In terms of storage, the GX 550 is well endowed with plenty of pockets, a useful recessed bin above the glove compartment, seat-back pockets, and storage space in the doors.
With the rear seats folded, the GX offers 90.5 cubic feet of cargo space, with access provided by both a liftgate and an power tailgate. Our vehicle featured a large waterproof protective mat in the back, but GX features additional underfloor compartments as well as available retractable storage cover, latch points for securing cargo, plus power outlets.
While other trims of the GX do offer third row seating, the Lexus GX Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims specifically do not.
2026 Lexus GX550 Technology and UX

Up front, a 14-inch center touchscreen anchors the vehicle’s technology. Physically, the interface is crisp, anti-reflective, and quick to respond to touches and the screen includes multi-touch capabilities for zooming.
In terms of software, the GX utilizes Lexus Interface, an entirely proprietary operating system designed by the brand. Unlike other manufacturers who often modify a version of the Android operating system, the operating system is easy to use and quite comprehensive, clearly integrated into the vehicle across both the touch screen and the digital instrument cluster.

The main navigation lives along the left side of the screen, granting quick access to vehicle features, settings, audio, and connectivity. A high-contrast color scheme is available in light and dark modes. Structurally, breadcrumb menus are arranged in a list or grid view with huge tap targets and simple on/off toggles, highlighting Lexus Interface’s commitment to accessibility and convenience. This is often an oversight in other operating systems.
The Lexus GX 550 supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. These third-party systems occupy nearly the entire screen when active. Returning to the Lexus Interface is a single tap away. Occasionally, system-level notifications or temporary messages obstruct the third-party UI and interestingly (or conveniently), when a third-party operating system is enabled, the climate control cannot be hidden. Lexus’ native operating system allows the climate control view to be collapsed.
Like BMW’s ConnectedDrive or Mercedes’ Store, Lexus offers optional subscription-based features, including Traffic Jam Assist and Drive Connect with cloud navigation and Intelligent Assistant voice interaction, accessed through Lexus Interface. These features generally cost $15.00 to $20.00 per month.
Our test vehicle included the optional Mark Levinson 21-speaker audio system, which produces a rich, cinematic stage even at low volumes.

Lexus’ native navigation system functions exactly the way a good navigation system should function: uncomplicated and up-to-date. Lexus Destination Assist, a live agent concierge is built into the native navigation system. This unique feature is one we will miss.
What is Lexus Destination Assist?
Lexus Destination Assist is a 24/7 service connecting drivers to live agents who can help with finding businesses, points of interest, or addresses. The agent can send directions directly to the vehicle's navigation system.
The spoken directions from the system are easy to understand. Overall, the Lexus voice control system is quick and responsive, but the UI takes over the entire screen when it’s in use. That feels somewhat counter to the core intention of the voice control (low visual impact and minimized distraction). Voice control is accessed by saying “Hey, Lexus”.
Do Lexus vehicles have voice control as a standard feature?
Yes. Most models from 2022 and onward feature a The Assistant voice control as standard. The system enables a natural and easy-to-use way to interact with the in-vehicle features through a voice-first approach.
Intelligent Assistant is an advanced version of The Assistant and is a paid feature, as part of the Connected Services subscription.

There are physical knobs and buttons for climate temperature and volume, which blend their functionality with the touchscreen. A heated steering wheel compliments heated and ventilated seats.
Lexus GX 550 Safety, Driver Assistance, and On-Road Driving

The 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 in the GX 550 enables 349 horsepower with 479 lb-ft of torque. That shows up on the highway with exquisite acceleration with a delicious roar. Torque delivery is smooth and immediate at low RPM, helping disguise the vehicle’s substantial curb weight. Acceleration to 60 mph takes 6.5 seconds, which feels brisk for a body-on-frame SUV.
Often taken for granted as an automotive bare minimum, Lexus’ Electronic Power Steering is simply the best in this class. An innovation born from the provocative RZ, steering in the GX is exceedingly stable and immediately reactive, with no wobble or jerking, even on the roughest terrain. The SUV enjoys complete stability at highway speeds with floatiness feeling nearly non-existent. This great steering is only enhanced by the thoughtful application of driver assistance features.

Nearly every vehicle at every price point has some mix of safety and driver assistance features as standard. Differentiation comes from how sensitive and responsive these systems are in their default settings. Every 2026 GX includes Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, bundling a range of tools into a unified driver’s assistance suite. These include:
Pre-Collision System with pedestrian/cyclist detection
Lane Departure Alert with steering assist
Lane Tracing Assist
Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
Road Sign Assist
Proactive Driving Assist

The default mix of driver assistance and safety features in the Lexus is not as obsessively protective as Subaru’s (making driving almost boring), but not as lenient as BMW (where safety features are so pared down you’d think they didn’t exist).
The most reactive system is the Pre-Collision System. While not creating genuine false positives, the vehicle would sometimes slam the brakes in harmless scenarios such as switching lanes in close proximity to a leading car. If anything, this system works as intended (and certainly humbled this NYC-based driver!), but in city traffic, this type of action is the standard, not an exception.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is truly excellent, with smooth braking, acceleration and lane-changing capabilities— simply switching on the turn signal made it happen. Pared with Traffic Jam Assist (a paid feature), busy New York City’s stop-and-go highway driving became (almost) blissful. Note that the sensor to track eye position (a requirement to use some systems) could be challenged by dark sunglasses.

Parking is effortless with sensors and cameras giving rich context. We especially appreciated the shadow view of the vehicle itself in real time, enabled when reversing or using the aformentioned “View” button on the driver’s side. The Overtail+ also features a Multi-Terrain Monitor with underbody camera feeds, reducing guesswork in technical off-road situations.
Off-Road Performance: Where Overtrail+ Earns Its Name
2026 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+. Image: Ben Yamin Schmidt.
Chief Engineer Tsukasaki described the new GX as a reset rather than an update. His goal was to create a Lexus off-roader that represents the brand’s authentic core, developed through extensive testing on winding roads, dirt tracks, and rocky terrain around the world. This is the part Lexus got spectacularly right.
Critical to the mission is in the GX 550’s bones: the SUV sits on the same GA-F ladder frame used in the jumbo Lexus LX, leading to a vehicle that is intentionally over-indexed on structural integrity and stiffness.
Full-time 4WD with low range makes climb out and snowy paths easy to negotiate. The torque sensing (Torsen) differential is useful in every scenario: on dry pavement, it helps the GX 550 feel planted and predictable through corners. Off-road, it prevents wheel spin when climbing loose gravel, mud, or uneven rock.
What is a torsen locking center differential?
A Torsen (torque sensing) locking center differential automatically balances power between the front and rear wheels using mechanical gears rather than software.
The Overtrail takes control even further with an electronically locking rear differential, an Overtrail-exclusive feature suited for more extreme driving.
Driving Modes in 2026 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+. Image: Ben Yamin Schmidt.
More off-road centric features include E-KDSS (Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System) for automatically managing sway bars, Crawl Control with five selectable speeds, Multi-Terrain Select for sand, mud, rock, dirt, deep snow.
2026 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+. Image: Ben Yamin Schmidt.
Each mode in Multi-Terrain Select genuinely adjusts throttle response, braking force, traction control, and suspension behavior to match specific surfaces. In practice, each mode subtly reshapes how the GX moves, making the vehicle feel calmer and more deliberate rather than reactive when the terrain gets difficult, relevant in both on-road and off-road situations.
Trim Levels and Pricing

The GX lineup spans six models: Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, Overtrail, and Overtrail+, with prices starting at just under $67,000, before running up to nearly $87,000 with a fully loaded Overtrail+.
What is the difference between the Overtrail vs. Overtrail+?
The Overtrail is the purist’s off-road-focused GX, while Overtrail+ layers in flagship-level comfort without compromising capability. Both the Overtrail and Overtrail+ share the same core off-road hardware, including the 1-inch suspension lift, E-KDSS, locking rear differential, Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select, and 33-inch all-terrain tires. The Overtrail+ adds luxury features like front massaging seats, a power rear door with kick sensor, Panoramic View Monitor with Multi-Terrain Monitor, and additional comfort and technology upgrades.
Conclusion: The 2026 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+
2026 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+. Image: Ben Yamin Schmidt.
The newest Lexus GX enters a field where luxury SUVs either skew toward urban-only machines or merely hint at being an off-roader, requiring strict conditions for performance. The Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+ is one of the few that is genuinely engineered for challenging terrain. Rather than layer off-road capabilities onto a luxury SUV, the Overtrail+ actually layers luxury features on top of an off-road first SUV, resulting in a vehicle that feels purposeful, exceptionally stable off-road, very luxurious inside, and refreshingly tactical.
