Chalet Mirabell Review: A Theatrical Italian Alpine Retreat With an Impressive Spa (+ Photos!)

Perched on a steep slope in the heart of the Italian Alps, the family-owned Chalet Mirabell is big, moody, and luxurious. With commanding views, a sleek lounge and a sprawling spa, the property feels potent and charged—like being inside a James Bond film.

High: Breakfast, lunch and dinner included for all guests, regardless of accommodation. Extraordinary spa. Huge terrace on the Panorama Suite. A focus on using locally-made products, from the food and drink to cosmetics.

Lows: Rushed breakfast service. Some mildly questionable design choices.

Verdict: A truly sprawling escape in the Italian Alps, Chalet Mirabell’s thoughtful separation of family and adult-only area makes it an ideal choice.

The Room to Get: Panorama Suite.

Must Do: Lama Dinner with the hotel’s own alpaca and llama. Skiing lessons at Meran 2000.

Chalet Mirabell Hotel Location and Architecture

Chalet Mirabell View. Image: Ben Schmidt.

Depending on your persuasion, Chalet Mirabell is situated in the South Tyrol, Südtirol, or Alto Adige region of Italy, arguably the centerpiece of the Italian Alps and home to some of its most dramatic peaks and picturesque towns.

Unlike so many resorts which are hours from any centers, Chalet Mirabell, first opened in 2004, is perched immediately above the spa town of Meran or Merano, one of the larger settlements in the region and sited directly on the routes to Verona or Innsbruck, Austria (via Brenner Pass). A car is recommended, but train and bus service is readily available in the town.

Chalet Mirabell, along with its Bergvillen independent chalets and slightly more rustic Chalet Zuegg, colonizes a gentle west-facing slope of a mountain culminating at the Essenbergspitz or Monte Essa of the Sarntal Alps, themselves a part of the larger Eastern Rhaetian Alps.

Here, on the “sun terrace of Merano", the secret-but-not-secret Meran 2000 ski resort offers pristine snowfields and mostly tree-free skiing and Chalet Mirabell provides a free shuttle to the mountain’s base (about a 10 minute drive).

Chalet Mirabell Architecture. Image: Ben Schmidt.

Chalet Mirabell Architecture. Image: Ben Schmidt.

Chalet Mirabell itself is quite monumental— not necessarily tall, but certainly sprawling. Designed by Hansjörg Weger of PlanTeam in collaboration with the managing family, the hotel is physically large but never crowded. Wandering its grounds feels like a time-honored tradition.

Once a 16-room alpine hotel designed in the conventional way, the property underwent several expansions and now it is a monolithic and moody mansion, particularly marked by its linear presence which incorporates terraces, curves and overhangs, walls of glass and the use of a dark wood facade— this in itself in contrast to the bright fir or pine exterior cladding typically found in this area.

With careful use of light strips and natural landscaping (not dense at this elevation), Chalet Mirabell is seductive and slightly intimidating, but never alienating or uncomfortable.

In the winter, Chalet Mirabell is often cloaked in fog and snow, enhancing the brooding sensibility of its the exterior, but warm lighting indoors reminds one of the comforts that await. Almost every room features a terrace.

Chalet Mirabell is defined by its precise angles, imaginative use of texture, and constant reminder of the outdoors. Composed of distinct eras, it is an architectural marvel that deserves examination.

Chalet Mirabell Arrival and Check-in

Lobby at Chalet Mirabell. Image: Ben Schmidt.

Lobby at Chalet Mirabell. Image: Ben Schmidt.

We arrived at Chalet Mirabell in the dead of night, coming from the east where we were watching the Winter Olympics in Cortina, a charming town on the other side of the Dolomiti mountain range. Despite our late arrival, the desk was manned by a helpful receptionist who doubled as the valet and the porter.

The lobby, serving as a bridge between the newer and older parts of the Chalet Mirabell, is a ultra-contemporary arrangement with rich textures— an indulgent fireplace, sitting area, and a huge dining table made it feel like we were arriving to a private chalet. Distant mountains fill the floor-to-ceiling windows, taking on a striking blue hue as evening settled in.

The receptionist escorted us to the room where a plate of local delicacies, wine, and breads awaited us. This was the first instance of Chalet Mirabell’s hospitality in action, where the team proactively asked— given our late arrival— if we’d like dinner in the room.

We were also provided with a small welcome packet with a guide to the award-winning spa and a map of the property.

Chalet Mirabell Hotel 2 Bedroom Panorama Suite

Chalet Mirabell Hotel Panorama Suite. Image: Ben Schmidt.

Chalet Mirabell Hotel Panorama Suite. Image: Ben Schmidt.

A literal penthouse perched on the edge of a mountain, the Panorama Suite lives up to its name in both scale (huge) and views (panoramic). Mountain vistas stream in from floor-to-ceiling windows with blackout curtains while the room itself contains an outdoor terrace, primary bedroom, primary bathroom, plus a separate bedroom with two twin beds and an addition bathroom.

Chalet Mirabell Hotel Panorama 2 Bedroom Suite. Image: Ben Schmidt.

At nearly 900 square feet, this is a bespoke suite with a dedicated entry, not simply two connecting rooms designated as a “two bedroom”. The areas can be divided so that the occupants of each room have reasonable privacy. The Chalet Mirabell (and the Panorama Suite in particular) is ideal for families.

The primary bedroom features a desk, sofa, chairs and a king size bed, as well as access to a large covered balcony with furniture. Unlike the angular, dark exterior, colors and textures inside are muted and plush. Soft surfaces and light woods melt into a creamy suede bed frame.

The interior design was executed by the Reiterer family and Köck & Bachler, a design firm based in the region. The outcome is a mix of timelessly Alpine ideas (wood, stone), along with some contemporary flourishes that occasionally feel of the time (a renovation took place in 2014).

These trendy details are especially evidence in the globular wall sconces, “healing” blue lighting in the bathroom, and the questionably-scaled wall graphics (known here as the Lebensblumen, or Life Flower). These elements bring a degree of Pinterest board energy to the room, but in no way detract from the sheer comfort and luxury of the space.

The second bedroom, prepared with two twin beds, features a large television and views. The beds are prepared in the traditional Alpine manner (one individual down comforter per guest)

Between the primary bedroom and the extra bedroom, there is a spacious dressing area with illuminated closets and a mix of storage. The closet doors are lined in suede, a genuinely unexpected texture. Conveniently, a bench and mirror frame the opposite wall.

Chalet Mirabell took care to source extremely local products for the minibar and snack tray, including chips from Ultner Brot (based in Südtirol), dried apple slices from Kandlwaalhof Luggin farm, apple juice from Kohl Cuvée, and bottled water from Meran. Curating regional snacks is something we wish more properties would do.

Coffee comes from Nespresso, while the tea is from local producer mon thea. Cups and plates come from Villeroy & Boch.

While many rooms at Chalet Mirabell have a terrace or balcony (certain suites even feature hot tubs), the Panorama Suite enjoys unobstructed views over Meran from its 240 square foot loggia, with a day bed and chair enjoying all-day sun thanks to its southwest orientation.

Bright and spacious with thoughtful lighting, the two bathrooms in the Panorama Suite each feature radiant-heat flooring and a refined mix of textures, including smooth stone and wood with black fixtures by Hansgrohe.

The primary bathroom features a soaking tub and a distinctive window with no blinds or opacity. In fact, the primary bathroom features two internal windows, which may not be ideal if you’re sharing the room with non-family members.

Plush robes and a spa kit are on hand, along with plenty of storage (both shelves and drawers). Along with the capacious closets, the Panorama Suite is ideal for extended stays.

The toilet room also features a bidet.

Chalet Mirabell Hotel Service and Staff

Chalet Mirabell Hotel Panorama 2 Bedroom Suite. Image: Ben Schmidt.

Chalet Mirabell Hotel Panorama 2 Bedroom Suite. Image: Ben Schmidt.

The approach to service at Chalet Mirabell is understated yet thoroughly modern and rich in personality, the property preserves some of its family operated charm. There is an ease to the place, a feeling you are free to do as you please without judgement (increasingly rare in five star places)

Chalet Mirabell Hotel Welcome Letter. Image: Ben Schmidt.

We rarely encountered staff except in the restaurants and bars, where proprietors Christine and Michael Reiterer would often appear around dinner time, chatting with guests. Their son, Martin, was possibly the most visible member of the team, serving as an executive triage manager for all sorts of requests. Even the spa had notably few visible staff, granting a real sense of privacy. All transactions were handled at the front desk.

Chalet Mirabell Restaurant. Image: Ben Schmidt.

Overall, there is a sense of directness in service that American travelers may find somewhat unexpected. A good example came at breakfast, where the server was practically begging for us get breakfast, because the buffet would strictly close on the hour.

Later, she suggested we finish our coffees in a different room so she could prepare for the lunch. It would have felt like we were being rushed without the context. This is a cultural norm here, where German and Austrian rule-following mixes with the more casual Italian philosophies of life. Be on time, but enjoy your time.

Worth noting is Chalet Mirabell’s commitment to sustainability. While many hotels opaquely describe their ecological footprint (and service often suffers), Chalet Mirabell’s appreciation for nature comes through in the service and literal operation of the property.

Service is refined by providing towels on request, and housekeeping comes with less frequency, unless requested. Turn down service was completed promptly.

The local products in the minibar and bathroom are visible examples of sustainability done right, while there are out-of-sight details such as an on-site wood chip plant for energy, the use of rainwater for flushing, and wood fiber building insulation.

Chalet Mirabell Hotel Spa, Facilities, Amenities, and Garden

Chalet Mirabell Hotel Heated Outdoor Pool. Image: Ben Schmidt.

Chalet Mirabell Hotel Family Heated Outdoor Pool. Image: Ben Schmidt.

While the hotel itself is certainly extraordinary, the Spa at Chalet Mirabell is an sprawling hub of relaxation, containing all sorts of zones. In fact, it’s so comprehensive, we’d give it its own story.

Briefly, the many pools of Chalet Mirabell’s Spa are connected via a subterranean network of hallways leading to saunas, relaxation rooms, treatment rooms, and fitness areas. The spa is actually divided into a family friendly space as well as a comprehensive adults-only premium spa.

A family-friendly pool is both indoor and outdoor and open year round while a zero-edge, adults-only pool is tucked behind a rotunda and has commanding views of the mountains. The menu of spa services is extensive, and includes special treatments for children and teens. While the day spa is open to the public with a reservation, it was never crowded. In fact, we were hard pressed to find anyone else in the premium spa.

Back outside, a bio-regeneration zone is a natural pond bubbling with life, even in the winter, where it comes a plunge pool. In the summer, it becomes the region’s longest natural swimming pond, fed with spring water.

Chalet Mirabell Hotel Food and Dining

One of the most underrated aspects of Chalet Mirabell is the fact that all guests can enjoy gourmet breakfast, lunch, and dinner as part of the room cost (known as 3/4 board). The chef is able to accommodate dietary requirements.

Chalet Mirabell Formal Dining. Image: Ben Schmidt.

Chalet Mirabell’s culinary offering is truly extraordinary with themed gastronomy, as well as daily prix-fixe menu with a rotating selection of entrées suitable for different diets and tastes. Guests are asked to not use cell phones in the dining room, a mildly anachronistic touch that we found to be extremely effective.

One evening, we enjoyed a local delicacy of boiled meats, prepared at the table, as Herr Michael made conversation nearby.

Across from us, a table was being prepared for a birthday celebration. There are a selection of dining rooms, ranging from wood-paneled to flooded with light, suitable for any mood. Nonetheless, a table is reserved for your exclusive use for the duration of the stay.

Chalet Mirabell Buffet Kitchen. Image: Ben Schmidt.

Most meals involve a trip into the kitchen for a salad bar, fresh fish, or other dishes. Its unmissable as one must pass through to reach other parts of the hotel, a unique arrangement of flow that actually worked quite well.

The buffet area changes over the course of a day, with breakfast composed of every nut, seed, cereal and bread one can imagine (in addition to a particularly remarkable variety of honey), then to lunch and dinner which might feature a huge range of olive oils, salad parts, and cured meats.

On occasion, the culinary team can prepare special al fresco dining, which we experienced as a lunch one afternoon. Most mornings, we enjoyed a fresh breakfast with views of the mountains.

Chalet Mirabell Outdoor Dining. Image: Ben Schmidt.

By late evening, the place to be is Mountain Blue Bar, with its cool light (the blue light used very effectively here!) and glittering bar area.

It feels genuinely theatrical here, where a live band plays nights and, as guests file in, you finally realize that you’re not the only person at Chalet Mirabell. It’s a testament to the scale of the property, but also the careful social choreography in play. The bar feels classic and modern at once, with a lengthy list of cocktails and pleasant people watching. The vantage points feel downright Bondian.

Chalet Mirabell Hotel Conclusion

Chalet Mirabell view toward the Bergvillen. Image: Ben Schmidt.

Chalet Mirabell comes packed with personality while still being a resolutely luxurious and highly-designed hotel in the Italian Alps. It’s commitment to ecological protection while providing top service is a commendable feat that other five star hotels could learn from. The award-winning spa and vast breakfast remain highlights of our travel. We can recommend Chalet Mirabell to families looking for a plush Alpine stay somewhat above the beaten path, but not quite off of it.

Chalet Mirabell is located at Via Falzeben, 112, 39010 Avelengo BZ, Italy. Information and reservations here.
