Review: iGA Lounge at Istanbul Airport (IST): Light, Bright, and Surprisingly Fun (With Photos)

The iGA Lounge at Istanbul Airport is the result of several individual lounges being consolidated into a single mega-hub. A risky move for obvious reasons, we wondered if such an enormous space can still offer the peace and provisions expected from a luxury airport lounge. Dan Latif takes us upstairs.

Highs: High-quality and generous food service available 24/7, with offerings that evolve throughout the day. Remarkable cleanliness. Impressive scale and variety of spatial configurations.

Lows: Frequent crowding despite the lounge’s large footprint. Access limited to six hours.

Verdict: A lounge you absolutely should visit, especially if you have time to spare at the airport, where you can enjoy one last escape and savor traditional Turkish dishes along with a selection of classic local sweets before boarding your flight.

Who can use the iGA Lounge at Istanbul Aiport (IST)?

Eligible passengers include those holding an iGA Pass Card (Plus, Extra, or Premium), travelers flying with partner airlines (including the SkyTeam Alliance) or affiliated institutions (such as American Express), participants in contracted travel programs such as Priority Pass, Dragonpass, HighPass, or LoungeMe, as well as passengers with an iGA Daily Pass. Access is also available to individuals making digital purchases, purchasing entry directly at the desk, or those who have secured the Meet & Greet service.

The iGA Lounge at Istanbul Airport opened in April 2019, shortly after the full transition of commercial passenger operations to the new Istanbul Airport in early April 2019. The airport itself is located about 40 km from the city center, accessible by metro, bus, and taxi. While the airport and lounge is called iGA (Istanbul Grand Airport Havalimanı İşletmesi A.Ş), the airport code remains IST.

Along with two other, smaller lounges, the iGA lounge was introduced as the airport’s flagship independent lounge in the international terminal, designed to replace and consolidate many of the previous airline-specific lounges that operated at the old Atatürk Airport (now operating as a general aviation airport).

Can I buy a day pass for the iGA Lounge at Istanbul Aiport?

Yes. At the time of writing, a day pass (single entrance) is priced at €95.83 plus taxes, or around USD $114.00. It can be purchased on-site.

Spanning nearly 5,150 square meters or 55,000 square feet and accommodating more than 650 travelers, the iGA Lounge in the makes its scale clear from the outset. The complexity of its layout and the magnitude of its footprint are not immediately intuitive.

At the entrance, a detailed floor plan greets visitors — less a decorative gesture than a practical necessity. It allows you to step back and understand the organization of a lounge that unfolds in layers.

It is a carefully structured environment designed to absorb the steady rhythm of long-haul transit, with a wide variety of seating types, views, and interior textures tones ranging from leafy greens and rich woods to local tile work and walls of glass.

Three expansive “terraces” extend the interior footprint, including the Bosphorus Terrace, which overlooks a smaller lounge formerly operated as the SkyTeam Lounge and now incorporated into the iGA Lounge.

Despite frequent crowding, the lounge rarely feels compressed. The zoning allows for different postures of occupancy: focused work, quiet retreat, casual dining, even the possibility of stretching out for rest.

Hot options include pasta with chicken or Bolognese sauce. Nearby, chefs prepare pide — elongated Turkish flatbreads topped with cheese or meat — emerging from the oven in steady five-minute intervals. Another station cooks köfte to order and prepares stir-fried noodles.

What is Köfte?

Köfte are seasoned meatballs or patties, usually made from ground beef or lamb with herbs and spices. The dish originates from the Persian word kufteh (“pounded meat”) and spread widely through the Ottoman world.

The lounge is basically an airport inside an airport. Of course, there are essentials: Several dedicated restroom and shower areas, a multi-faith prayer room, and lounge chairs everywhere. Other essentials include the holographic AI assistant as part of the Invest in Türkiye campaign by the President of Türkiye’s Investment and Finance Office, whom you can ask questions about investment opportunities in 150 languages.

Some guests settle in for a few hours; others for much longer layovers, like the Filipino traveler encountered on site facing a thirty-hour wait. WiFi is complimentary throughout the lounge.

Finally, near the bar, a surprisingly active pool table.

“Who wants to play?” calls out a solo traveler.

Within moments, a father and daughter step forward, cues in hand, starting a game with strangers. Others gather around the table. Some lean against the bar, beer in hand, watching with surprising intensity. Sofas are subtly repositioned for a better angle. Informal teams form and wait their turn.

The pool table and the bar function together as a social hinge within the lounge. The architecture may distribute bodies efficiently, but this table gathers them. Conversations begin without effort. Accents mix. For the duration of a match, the airport’s transient condition softens. What might have remained a solitary layover becomes shared time.

If you’re stuck with a lengthy layover in the busy (and getting busier) Istanbul Airport, the iGA lounge is a clean escape that leans into its Turkish roots, especially in respect to food and drink. With plenty of alliances making means of access inexpensive or free, it should be a no-brainer for a stop. But a steep at-the-door entry fee might discourage those without a pass or a short layover.

iGA Lounge at Istanbul International Airport is located at Tayakadın, Terminal Caddesi No:1, 34283 Arnavutköy-İstanbul, Türkiye. Opening times and more information here.
